In 1985 a group of women, visiting the New York MOMA , realized that out of the 165 artists present only 17 were women. Exasperate, they found Guerrilla Girls, a group of women artists who since then, through posters, books and public events, work on female discrimination in art, in culture and in politics. Since then the Guerrilla Girls appear in public always with a gorilla mask, erasing their personal identity to focus the attention on the problem of sexual discrimination rather than on their personality. During these years the Guerrilla Girls have shown their work in the main museums and in the most important international exhibitions and their work has been introduced on the major art magazines and international media.
On the occasion of the Biennale di Venezia 2005 the group carried out again the survey on the female presence among the artists of MOMA. After 15 years from the first survey, the presence of female artists has decreased from 5% to 3%.
